COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH SERVICES

Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital is a 70-bed acute care facility, fully accredited by the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, and is a member of the American Hospital Association. We offer a comprehensive range of services to patients, from birth to geriatric care.

  • Surgery: Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital has two fully-equipped surgical suites as well as up-to-date outpatient surgery facilities. Inpatient and outpatient care includes such general and specialized procedures as gynecology, orthopedics, urology, and general, vascular, and colorectal surgery.
  • Specialized Nursing Units: We have specialized care to meet the needs of each individual patient. Our resources and staff are here to serve the medical and social needs of those under our care.
    1. Medical/Surgical: a 56-bed nursing unit, including private and semi-private rooms, provides personalized care for patients and families. Our highly skilled nursing staff uses a team approach to treat our patients like the friends and neighbors they are. This unit also serves pediatric patients, so children in our service area can have access to inpatient care close to home.
    2. Intensive Care Unit: Our six-bed ICU provides 24-hour observation and critical care for patients with traumatic injuries or life-threatening illnesses, and is staffed by a highly trained team of physicians and nurses.
    3. Family-Oriented Birthing Center: Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital pioneered the home-like birthing center concept in West Virginia. We pride ourselves on making every delivery as comfortable and family-oriented as possible.
  • Emergency Services: Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital has a well-equipped, seven-bed emergency department staffed around the clock with fully trained emergency physicians and nurses. Lewis County emergency medical units have radio access to our emergency department. We are connected to major medical centers and teaching hospitals in West Virginia through the HealthNet emergency helicopter flight service.

    REHABILITATIVE & DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES

Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital has a full array of technologically advanced equipment and services to diagnose and treat medical problems, and to facilitate as complete a recovery as possible.

  • Physical Therapy: The purpose of physical therapy is to prevent, identify, alleviate and correct acute and prolonged movement dysfunction. The department is staffed by licensed physical therapists and support staff. Treatments available include: evaluation, exercise, "TENS", electrotherapy, heat and cold therapy, ultrasound, gait training, sports medicine, isokinetics, industrial rehabilitation, ultraviolet, whirlpools, function training and home instructions.
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation: Located in the physical therapy department, cardiac rehabilitation services are designed to help the recovering heart patient return to a healthy and enjoyable life. Under the direction of a board-certified cardiologist, patients are carefully screened and admitted only upon physician referral. Services include stress testing, individually designed aerobic exercise programs, and monitoring of heart function and blood pressure.
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation: Our pulmonary rehab department will help individuals struggling with diseases of the lungs return to a more healthy and satisfying lifestyle. Our program is a comprehensive approach to patient care, including education about pulmonary disease, lifestyle changes, incorporation of mild physical activity, and handling the psychological effects of a patient's condition.
  • Laboratory: This department is staffed with well-trained professional medical technologists 24 hours a day. State-of-the-art technology provides rapid testing and reporting to assist physicians with diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • Medical Imaging Technologies: Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital has the most advanced and efficient x-ray and other imaging technologies available. The Department is staffed by fully trained and certified technicians and radiologists.
  • Computerized Tomography: Our CT scanner performs rapid whole body scans, and can obtain high quality slice-like images of selected body areas.
  • Nuclear Medicine: Our physicians have at hand the latest in diagnostic medical imaging with a sophisticated digital gamma camera system. This high performance nuclear medicine system provides for quicker, more accurate diagnoses by allowing physicians to observe the physiology, rather than just the structure, of the heart and other organ systems.
  • MRI: Magnetic resonance imaging is a new computer-assisted diagnostic technique which acquires images without the use of radiation.
  • Ultrasound: The ultrasound unit provides high quality diagnostic information to our medical staff. Major applications include obstetrics, abdominal and pelvic examination and analysis, as well as vascular and echocardiography studies.
  • Mammography: Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital offers low-dose mammograms as part of a complete diagnostic and educational program that is ARC accredited and Medicare certified. Our system incorporates highly desired features such as low radiation, sharper images and less compression for more comfort. Mammography services, performed by female technicians, are designed for the comfort, privacy and convenience of our patients.
  • Respiratory Care Department: From diagnosis to surgery to rehabilitative therapy, our pulmonary department uses the most modern equipment and latest techniques. Under the direction of a board-certified pulmonologist, services include: pulmonary function testing, respiratory therapy, sleep studies, EKG and EEG.

    OUTPATIENT DEPARTMENT

Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital's thoroughly modern outpatient department serves patients whose procedures do not require an inpatient stay, but who need some special preparation and recovery.

The outpatient department is designed and operated for the care and well-being of patients who will be anesthetized or otherwise impaired or incapacitated for a short time as a result of their procedures.

Procedures available through the outpatient department include same-day surgery, endoscopy, blood transfusions, and chemotherapy.

The department has a ward of ten fully reclining chairs, each with its own privacy curtain. Here patients are prepared for their surgical procedure or treatment. After the procedure, patients return to the outpatient department for recovery and discharge.

    SUPPORT SERVICES

Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital believes in treating the person, not just the illness; and, by extension, the family, not just the patient. We have a number of services that provide aid and comfort beyond the healing arts.

  • Social Services Program: The hospital employs a social service representative to act as liaison between the hospital and the patient and family. This trained individual is available to help with questions or problems regarding the hospital stay. She also serves as an information and referral resource for social services and personal services outside the hospital, including help with public assistance applications and arrangements for nursing home care.
  • Discharge Planning: We recognize that a patient's recovery often extends beyond the hospital stay. We work closely with the patient, the physician, the patient's family and appropriate community agencies, when necessary, to provide an appropriate continuum of care.
  • Chapel and Chaplaincy: A number of the community's clergy volunteer their services to provide counseling and spiritual comfort to patients and families. There is a chapel in the hospital for prayer and meditation.
  • Financial Counseling: Our financial services office can help patients and families identify resources and options for meeting their obligations, including referrals to appropriate agencies for public assistance.
