SJMH - A Vital Part of the Community

SJMH's Statement of Values cites community commitment as an essential element in assuring the Hospital's vital role as a clinical and economic resource. The Hospital lives up to this commitment in the many roles it plays in community activities. At all levels the Hospital and its staff are a vibrant part of the local community. From local sports to the school system to community activities Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital is involved.

Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital is a proud Partner in Education with Robert L. Bland Middle School in Weston and Jane Lew School in Jane Lew. The Hospital has been able to provide financial and technical support to the schools in its partnership role.

Besides our commitment to the education of our children, the Hospital provides a number of healthy-life activities for area residents. SJMH provides free diabetes testing at various events throughout the year.

The Hospital has health fairs at grade schools, RLBMS Middle School, and Lewis County High School. The Hospital has also coordinated a number of Free Women's Health Screenings, which provide free pap tests and breast exams for women who can't afford it.

The Hospital cooperates with the Weston Rotary Club in providing an annual blood analysis program for area residents. The program provides a low-cost, preventive screening for more than 800 individuals. A mini-health fair for program participants is held at this time and provides pulse oximetry, bone density, and blood pressure screenings.

The Hospital is a corporate sponsor for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life held in Lewis County. Besides the financial contribution, SJMH has a number of Relay teams who are involved in the activity. In 2004, the Hospital began a relation with the American Heart Association as a corporate sponsor, when the first Lewis County Telethon was held at the local high school.

The Lewis County Extension Service annually conducts Energy Express, a summer nutrition/reading program for children. As well as providing financial backing for this worthwhile program, the Hospital provides personnel to conduct programs for the children.

The Hospital also takes an active role in the local United Way, the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce, and Family Resource Network.
